Splenius capitis and cervicis

Origin: Ligamentum nuchae, T1-T4 spinous processes

Insertion: Capitis- Mastoid process and superior nuchael line

Cervicis- C1-C4 transverse processes

Actions: Unilateral: lateral flexion and ipsilateral rotation of head/neck

Bilateral: extension of head/neck

Erector spinae (lateral)

Iliocostalis

Origin: Common tendon from posterior iliac crest, dorsal sacrum, and lumbar spinous processes

Insertion: angles of ribs (lumborum and thoracis) and cervical transverse processes (cervicis)

Actions: Unilateral: lateral flexion and ipsilateral rotation of trunk and head/neck. Bilateral: Extension of trunk and head/neck

Erector spinae (intermediate)

Longissimus

Origin:Common tendon from posterior iliac crest, dorsal sacrum, and lumbar spinous processes

Insertion:thoracic transverse processes and adjacent ribs (thoracis), cervical transverse processes (cervicis), mastoid process (capitis)

Actions:Unilateral: lateral flexion and ipsilateral rotation of trunk and head/neck. Bilateral: Extension of trunk and head/neck

Erector spinae (medial)

Spinalis

Origin:Common tendon from posterior iliac crest, dorsal sacrum, and lumbar spinous processes

Insertion: upper thoracic spinous processes (thoracis), cervical spinous processes and ligamentum nuchae (cervicis), occipital bone between nuchal lines (capitis)

Actions: Unilateral: lateral flexion and ipsilateral rotation of trunk/head/neck. Bilateral: Extension of trunk/head/neck

2. Semispinalis cervicis

3. Rotator longus

4. Rotator brevis

5. Multifundus lumborum

Origin:Dorsal sacrum and posterior iliac crest, lumbar mammillary processes, cervical and thoracic transverse processes

Insertion:Spinous processes and occipital bone

Actions:Unilateral: lateral flexion, contralateral rotation of trunk/head/neck. Bilateral: Extension of trunk/head/neck.

Span:

1. cervical to occipital bone

2. upper thoracic to C2

3. thoracic, 2 segments

4. thoracic, 1 segment

5. sacrum to lower thoracic

Levator costae

Origin: Thoracic transverse processes

Insertion: Superior borders of ribs 1-2 segments inferior

Actions: Elevate ribs, assist lateral flexion

Intersegmental muscles

Interspinalis

Intertransverse

Interspinalis: between adjacent spinous processes of cervical and lumbar vertebrae

Intertransverse: between adjacent transverse processes in cervical and lumbar region

Action: Role in proprioception

Suboccipital muscles

Rectus capitis posterior major

Origin: Spinous process of C2

Insertion: Inferior nuchal line, lateral to rcp minor

Actions: Extension (bilateral) and ipsilateral rotation (unilateral) of head

Suboccipital muscles

Rectus capitis posterior minor

Origin: Posterior tubercle of C1

Insertion: Inferior nuchal line, medial to rcp major

Actions: Extension (bilateral) of head

Suboccipital muscles

Obliquus capitis superior

Origin: Transverse process of C1

Insertion: Occiput between nuchal lines

Actions: Extension (bilateral) and lateral flexion (unilateral) of head

Suboccipital muscles

Obliquus capitis inferior

Origin: Spinous process of C2

Insertion: Transverse process of C1

Actions: Ipsilateral rotation (unilateral) of head
