What is an exponent?

The number of times a number is multiplied by itself

Place values for whole numbers

Tens 10(1)=10

Hundreds 10(2)=100

Etc

The number of digits make it obvious.

Place values for the decimal side

Tenths 10(-1)= .1

Hundredths 10(-2)= .01

Thousandths 10(-3)= .001

Etc. All exponents will be negative for decimal place values

Way to remember: if its .01 for hundredths, imagine a number in front of the decimal. The number of digits in total will indicate place value
