Degenerative Heart Disease (Atherosclerosis & Thrombus Formation)

Atherosclerosis is a disease in which plaque builds up inside your arteries. Arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood to your heart and other parts of your body. Plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood.

Thrombosis is the formation of a blood clot inside a blood vessel, obstructing the flow of blood through the circulatory system. When a blood vessel is injured, the body uses platelets (thrombocytes) and fibrin to form a blood clot to prevent blood loss.

Angina Pectoris (stable & unstable)

A: narrowing of 1 or more coronary arteries that causes an imbalance between thesupply of oxygen to the myocardium.

P: due to coronary artery disease

It represents myocardial ischaemia.

S&S:

Central, crushing chest pain which may radiate to the jaw, neck or arms. Precipitated by exertion, emotion, cold weather, heavy meals. Associated with dyspnea (breathing difficulty) and faintness

RF: male,+40

T: ECG

Unstable Angina: rapidly worsening, increasing frequency or severity on minimal exertion/rest. Attacks may last upto 20-30mins. If unrelieved by rest/GTN leads to higherrisk of MI

Myocardial Infarction

A: Occlusion of one or more coronary arteries and their branches that results in ischemia and necrosis of myocardial tissue

P: either the rupture of an atheromatous plaque and formation of a thrombus or when the liningof a sclerosed artery leads tocomplete occlusion

S&S: Suddenonset of ‘crushing’ central chest pain, radiating to arms, throat or backpersisting for hours. Feeling ofimpending doom! Sympatheticsigns e.g. Nausea/vomiting, sweating, fainting, shortness of breath

RF: male, genetic, >BP, smoking, lipids, stress

T: ECG
