Who rescued pages from the Book of Commandments?
July 20, 1833: Mary and Caroline Rollins rescued some of the pages the mob had scattered and hid in a corn field.
What were the circumstances surrounding the Book of Commandments being published? Were the lectures on faith ever published?
Yes - August 17, 1835: A solemn assembly met to accept the expanded volume of scripture, now known as the Doctrine and Covenants (reflecting the two distinct sections of the book: the seven Lectures on Faith, prepared for use in the School of the Prophets during 1834—1835, and revelations, often referred to as the “Covenants and Commandments.” Two other articles, one on marriage and one on government, were also added). This edition added forty-five new revelations, making 102 sections. Furthermore, revelations were referred to as sections rather than as chapters.

Under what circumstances was this revelation received? (section 85)
THE PROBLEMS IN MISSOURI, ABOUT THEM CREATING THEIR OWN STEWARDSHIPS
What about Section 67? What were the conditions behind it and the results of it?
THERE WERE NEGATIVE CONVERSATIONS ABOUT THE LANGUAGE JOSEPH USED IN THE REVELATIONS, THEY DIDN’T SOUND LIKE REVELATIONS. THIS SECTION IS THE RESULT OF THEIR QUESTIONING, THE LORD BEARS WITNESS OF THE PROPHET AND CHALLENGED THEM TO WRITE A REVELATION BETTER

What is a stewardship?
church callings, properties and goods, or other responsibilities both spiritual and temporal which the Lord has assigned to a given individual through his earthly ministers. “And verily in this thing ye have done wisely, for it is required of the Lord, at the hand of every steward, to render an account of his stewardship, both in time and in eternity.” (DC 72:3)
How does agency factor in?
Church members were never FORCED to surrender their belongings to the church leaders (mainly the bishop and the storehouse). In this way, it was entirely up to the individual whether or not he or she lived this law fully.
What is the difference between the law of consecration, the united order, and the law of tithing? (Think of the three legged stool)
1) The Law of Consecration is the Celestial law that the Lord has given and NOT revoked. It requires the saints to consecrate all that they have, their time, talents, energies, and belongings to the building up of the kingdom of god and the establishment of Zion in these latter days.
2) The United Order is the organization through which the Law of Consecration was facilitated in the early days of the church. It was how the properties were gathered, managed, and redistributed.
3) The Law of Tithing was an additional law given by the Lord in Section 119: “VERILY, thus saith the Lord, I require all their surplus property (consecrated property) to be put into the hands of the bishop of my church in Zion, And after that, those who have thus been tithed shall pay one-tenth of all their interest annually; and this shall be a standing law unto them forever, for my holy priesthood, saith the Lord.” In this way, those that have already consecrated are able to then pay a tenth of all of their accrued interest annually to the Lord.
What did Richard Holzapfel mean when he said Joseph Smith became a seer stone?
Throughout the course of his ministry, Joseph no longer needed to use seer stones or the Urim and Thummim in order to receive the word of God. He understood perfectly the manner of receiving revelation from the Lord.
What does Joseph learn about the apocrypha? What is the infallible principle that enables us to gain much from fallible texts?
(Hint: Holy Ghost) Section 91: “There are many things contained therein that are not true, which are interpolations by the hands of men. And whoso is enlightened by the Spirit shall obtain benefit therefrom;” Joseph was told not to translate the apocrypha. He learned that there were many things within that were true, but one would need the companionship of the Holy Ghost in order to gain any benefit therein.
The council on the disposition of tithes is composed of whom?
section 120: “VERILY, thus saith the Lord, the time is now come, that it shall be disposed of by a council, composed of the First Presidency of my Church, and of the bishop and his council, and by my high council; and by mine own voice unto them, saith the Lord. Even so. Amen.”
1) First Presidency
2) The Presiding Bishopric
3) The Quorum of the 12 Apostles
Why were code names used in some of the early revelations?
To preserve the privacy of the people whose names were mentioned. Eventually enough time had passed that it no longer was necessary for the names to be kept private so the publishers replaced the code names with the real names to the extent they could.
What blessings did the Children of Israel forsake? What was the preparatory law they received?
They forsook the Higher Priesthood through violation of the covenants and laws that they had received. They were given the Aaronic and Levitical priesthoods as a preparatory law. Section 84: 25-27,
25Therefore, he took Moses out of their midst, and the Holy Priesthood also;
26 And the lesser priesthood continued, which priesthood holdeth the key of the ministering of angels and the preparatory gospel;
27 Which gospel is the gospel of repentance and of baptism, and the remission of sins, and the law of carnal commandments, which the Lord in his wrath caused to continue with the house of Aaron among the children of Israel until John, whom God raised up, being filled with the Holy Ghost from his mother’s womb.
What are the blessings promised to those who keep the Word of Wisdom?
Section 89: 18-21
18 And all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones;
19 And shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures;
20 And shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint.
21 And I, the Lord, give unto them a promise, that the destroying angel shall pass by them, as the children of Israel, and not slay them. Amen.
What does Section 84 teach us about the Children of Israel? What blessings did they forsake?
They forsook the Higher Priesthood through violation of the covenants and laws that they had received. They were given the Aaronic and Levitical priesthoods as a preparatory law. Section 84: 25-27,
25Therefore, he took Moses out of their midst, and the Holy Priesthood also;
26 And the lesser priesthood continued, which priesthood holdeth the key of the ministering of angels and the preparatory gospel;
Sections 84 and 88 are preparing the saints for what?
Several things. Most importantly they were to prepare the saints to be brought back into the presence of God and to behold his glory. This included very detailed instructions about building a temple and instructing one another with the doctrine of the kingdom.
Know the Oath and Covenant of the Priesthood. Who makes this oath?
The priesthood holder's first responsibility is to receive in good faith and with honest intent both the Aaronic and the Melchizedek priesthoods. The covenant then obligates that priesthood holder to magnify his callings by fulfilling all the responsibilities associated with the office, teaching the word of God, and laboring with all his might to advance the purposes of the Lord

God then promises that those who fulfill their part of the agreement will be "sanctified by the Spirit unto the renewing of their bodies," will become "the sons of Moses and of Aaron and the seed of Abraham" and members of "the church and kingdom, and the elect of God," and will receive the Father's kingdom, and, thus, "all" that the "Father hath shall be given unto" them
Review Section 113: stem of Jesse? Rod and root of Jesse?
Stem: Christ
Rod and root: A servant in the hands of Christ, who is partly a descendant of Jesse as well as of Ephriam, or of the house of Joseph (it was talking about Joseph Smith, and partly the Lord)
What does it mean to steady the ark? Who is accused of this?
See D&C 85:8
In the OT Uzzah took it upon himself to steady the load of the ark instead of waiting for a priest to do it. After he touched the ark, he was struck dead.
In D&C 85 it is believed that Edward Partridge was the man being singled out, but this message is for anyone.
To steady the ark means to step into another person’s stewardship and correct what we believe to be error in the things there are doing. Even if a genuine problem exists, the problem must be resolved in the Lord’s way--through priesthood channels.
What is the sea of glass, as described in section 77? What is the significance of temporal and spiritual creations?
The sea of glass is the earth in its sanctified, immortal and eternal state.
All things are to be raised to a more perfect degree after the last ressurection.
Know the 7 trumps as described in Section 88
1. The first trump declares that the great and abominable church is ready to be burned (see D&C 88:94 ).
2. The second trump declares the eventual resurrection of terrestrial beings (see D&C 88:99 ; see also D&C 76:71–80 ).
3. The third trump declares the resurrection of telestial beings (see D&C 88:100–101 ; see also D&C 76:81–90 ).
4. The fourth trump declares the resurrection of those who remain filthy (see D&C 88:102 ; see also v. 32 ).
5. The fifth trump declares the hour of His judgment (see D&C 88:103–4).
6. The sixth trump declares that Babylon is fallen (see D&C 88:105 ; see also Revelation 14:8 ).
7. The seventh trump declares: “It is finished!” (see D&C 88:106 ; see also D&C 133:46–53 ).
Section 88: 36-39 refers to the laws of the kingdoms. What are these laws? What is requires for Celestial life?
Celestial Law: Sacrifice, Gospel, Chastity, Consecration
Short answer section: review D&C 84:33-44. Be able to list what man (and women) covenants to do, and what God swears with an oath he will do. Also, be able to list the 3 legs on the stool of consecration. What do each of those principles signify and how do they work together?
God: Sanctify, give all He has, temple/family
Man: Obtain Priesthood, Magnify Calling, Accept prophet/Lord, Family, heed& live word
