What is the CQR?

The CQR anchor is of the plow variety, with a hinge joining its two parts--holds well in mud and soft sand, but does not dig into hard sand or kelp too easily. Often has an eyelet near the plough blades (the flukes) for attaching a tripping line (extra line to pull out the anchor).

What is a Delta anchor?

A one-part anchor--very strong with high hold power--easy to drop from a bow roller using a windlass--ideal for short handed boat

What is the Bruce anchor?

One part claw anchor of high tensile strength and digs well into most surfaces except for kelp; stows well on the bow without becoming a battering ram.

Danforth Anchor

Anchor is in two parts with a 32 degree shank angle, which allows the anchor dig in well and bury itself. It is most commonly used as a second or smaller anchor because it folds flat in the cockpit locker. It can be difficult to break out, and can trap fingers very painfully.

What is a windlass?

An electric or mechanical anchor lass. The engine should be running with some throttle if the battery is to cope with the strain of weighing the anchor.

What are 8 questions to ask when anchoring?

1. Is the location enough for the present and forecast wind?

2. Does the chart show that anchoring is allowed?

3. Is the holding good?

4. Is there enough room for the boat to swing on the tide without going getting too close to other boats or shallow water?

5. Is the anchorage out of the shipping channel and strong tidal wind?

6. Is there a valley to funnel a strong wind?

7. Could I safely leave the anchorage in the dark?

8. Is it close to a landing place?

When anchoring, how much cable should I use?

All chain = 4 times the maximum expected depth

Chain and rope mix = 6 to 7 times the maximum expected depth

What should I do after anchoring?

1. Flip on the white light on the mast to indicate anchoring

2. Set the GPS coordinates for the anchor so an alarm goes off if the boat moves too much

Should the anchorage be approached downtide or into the tide?

Into the tide

If a mix of chain and rope is used, how much cable should be used for a maximum depth of 5 meters?

At least 30 meters --preferably 40 if there's enough cable.

What light should be displayed when anchoring at night?

An all round white light.
