What are four things that change a population's size?

1. Births

2. Deaths

3. Immigration

4. Emmigration

Life history traits relate to reproduction and include:

1. Time to reach reproductive age

2. Frequency of Reproduction

3. Number of offspring

4. The amount of parental care given to the offspring

Limiting factors are environmental factors that may limit population growth. These include:

available Food, available Water, available Space, accumulation of harmful Waste products, predation, pathogens, temperature, fire, flood, and storms.

How do limiting factors restrict population growth?

-decrease the birthrate -increase the deathrate -increase the rate of emigration

Three ways populations may change over time are:

(two are growth models)

1. Exponential growth –

(Growth model) 2. Logistical growth – (growth model)

3. Population - Cycles

Which three factors largely determine climate?

1. latitude

2. nearness to a large body of water

3. Mountains

What is latitude and how is it measured?

The middle line is the equator at 0 degrees. The top line is 90 degrees North, the bottom is 90 degrees South

What is the equator?

-The center measured latitude What do the tropic lines (tropic of cancer and tropic of Capricorn) indicate?

What do the tropic lines (tropic of cancer and tropic of Capricorn) indicate?

-The lines indicating the tropics (it is in between them,)

Where are the tropics?

-In between the tropic of Cancer and of Capricorn

Why do tropical regions of the earth have the warmest climates?

-Because they are the closest to the equator which means that they get the most sunlight

Where are temperate regions of the earth?

-In between the polar and tropic regions on both the top and the bottom of the equator.

Where are polar regions of the earth?

-Close to the poles (90 degrees North and South)

What effect do mountains have on temperature?

-The higher the altitude the cooler it is.

What effects do mountains have on rainfall?

-The rainshadow effect

What is a biome?

-a large naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat

2- savanna

-Aren't forrested, grassland.

3- desert

-Tropical areas and temperate areas -Hot or cool temperatures, just characterized by little to no rainfall -Rodents, lizards, snakes, insects they mostly come out at night -annual plants that only grow when there is rainfall -Water can run off and create a flash flood when there is water because there are no plants.

4- chaparral

-Found all around the mediterranian Sea -Named for a particular kind of shrub -dense evergreen shrubs -mild winters -rainy winters, the summers are hot and dry -frequent fires -deer, birds, snakes live there

5- temperate grassland

-Praries -most of it in the Northern America has been converted to farmlands -Not tons of trees except around bodies of water -Hot summers, Cold winters, moderate rainfall -Frequent fires -bobcats, coyotes, snakes, burrowing animals, insects, large grazing mammals live there

6- temperate deciduous forest

-Trees that lose their leaves seasonally -Hot summers Cold winters, high rainfall -deer, squirrels, birds, mice, snakes, foxes -In the Eastern U.S. but a lot of it has been converted to farm land

7- coniferous forest

-Pine trees/borio forrest/taiga -moose, bears, migratory birds, wolves

8- tundra -Has no trees

-Low growing plants, shrubs grasses, mosses, lichens, annuals -migrant birds, caribou, wolverines, foxes, wolves -little to no precipitation -High winds

Tropical forests are _____ in areas that receive abundant rainfall year round, and ______ in areas that are mainly dry or that have wet and dry seasons.

tropical

Temperate

The prairies of the U.S.A. are which biome?

-Temperate Grasslands

The three biomes that have frequent fires are:

1.Chaparral 2.Savannah 3.Temperate Grassland

Which biome has permafrost?

-Tundra

What is permafrost?

-A permanently frozen layer of ice beneath the top layer

In the polar ice biome the land is mostly covered by _____ or ____ year round

Snow

Ice

What animals live in the polar ice biome?

-penguins, polar bears, seals

Where do animals that live in the polar ice biome get their food?

-from the water

Aquatic biomes are ___ or ___ (saltwater).

Freshwater

Marine
