What were their beliefs on the causes and understanding of disease

In the Dark Ages a lot of medical knowledge was lost due to libraries being destroyed in wars. They believed superstitious factors caused disease for example miasmas (bad air), Gods and devils and the planets being unlined (astrology). They also believed that disease was spread due to the 4 humors being unbalanced.

Public Health and Treatments

Public health was almost non existent as aqueducts were destroyed in battle.

Dark Ages treatments involved purging and bleeding to balance the humours and if you were ill you would visit the local wise woman who would prescribe herbal remedies eg honey.

Limitations to Dark Ages Medicine

Lack of understanding of disease - no knowledge of germs - little anatomical knowledge

No public health - little understanding of how disease spread didn't feel the need to keep clean

Government spent money on war rather than improving public health
