Air pollution

When volcano erupts, it sends ash and pyroclastic material and gases like sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide into the air.

Block out sunlight, impeding photosynthesis of crops. This threatens food security and livelihood of people

Trigger and/or cause respiratory issues due to poisonous gases and ash

Ash clouds reduce visibility, threatening traffic movement especially air traffic. Causes halt in economic businesses such as trade and flight cancellations

Eg: Icelandic volcano eruption in 2010 send ash clouds containing abrasive glasses, sand and rock into the atmosphere. These poses a threat to aircraft engines and structure. This led to air space over Europe to be closed, causing a loss of 1.5 billion pounds

Widespread destruction

-lava

-pyroclastic flow

-landslide

Landslide

Force of eruption may lead to volcano cones collapsing. Large amount of rocks may bury towns and villages along the slope of the volcano with the people.

May obstruct traffic and river flow, impeding rescue and causing floods

Pyroclastic Flow

Rock fragments of varying sizes and hot, toxic moving at high speed of 200m/s.

People cannot outrun the flow and be killed by inhaling hot gases

Larger fragments destroy property and block paths

Lava

Low silica lava flows at a fast rate and covers great distances, destroying large areas
