What is the cakewalk and when was it created?
It began as a plantation dance of the slaves, it was the FIRST dance to crossover from the black to white society. 1890's.
What are the Black Minstrel shows and when did they occur?
1st indigenous african american muscical theatre form. In the 1840's. Made popular by daddy "jim crow" rice. It combine both english and black ways of dancing.
What is the charelston and when was it popular?
A world wide dance crazy that started with the harlem renaissance. Some danced in the Savoy ballroom. This dance was a strong statement of independence for women. 1920's.
What was the harlem renaissance?
In the 1920's when writers like Langston Hughes gave voice to the african american people. The era when the savoy ballroom opened.
Who is Master Juba?
"Best of the best," namely william henry lane from the black minstrel shows, the only black to be in them.
What was Cat's corner?
The northeast corner of the savoy ballroom where the most experienced dancers danced. The dancing done here was intense and strict.
What is improvosation?
To dance without previous knowledge of choreography.
What are samba schools?
Schools where children learn certain types of samba and then perform them in parades in the Carnival.
What is the Calenda?
derived from the congo, and constantly banned. it was a line and circle dance done by blacks throughout the carribean. "struck their thighs together then seperated with a pirouette."

brazilian national celebration that represents a fusion of portugese and african traditions.

african originated religion, practiced by the yoruba people with use of the orishas
Who is Jim Crow?
Famous black minstrel dancer, had a set of laws made after him called the jim crow laws (1865-1964). The laws involved segregation at public places but emphasized "serperate but equal"
What is Plessy v. Ferguson and when?
legalized the "seperate but equal" started in 1883
What is Brown vs Board of education?
1954, when the idea of segregation in schools was overruled and ended the ji crow laws. happened in kansas
What is the Congo square?
where black dances started getting popular for whites. in new orleans the slave holders would bring them to the city and start dancing. this was the beginning of the black to white crossover of dances.
What is capoeria?
It is an afro-brazillian art form that uses martial arts, games, music and dance. created in brazil by the africans.
What is diaspora?
The forced dispersment of africans from their countries. where the economics turned into slavery.
What is the Lindy? When?
a dance that came out of WW2. named after lindberg's flight. there was an important aspect of "breakaway" where the dancers could be solo and then come back together. 1930's-1940's.
What is a juke joint?
A place where blacks could dance and listen to music away from the whites, always in hidden places, sometimes on the plantations.
What is step dancing?
began as bonding experience but now it's tradition. beats are unique to african dancing.
What was the dred scott decision and when was it made?
supreme court ruled that american born slaves have no rights under the constitution. 1857
When was the civil war? and when were was the ammendment ratified?
1861 -65, In 1863 the emancipation procolamation was made and in 65 the 13th ammendment was ratified outlawing slavery.
When were the civil rights laws inacted?
1960's, movement happened in the 50's. During the 60's there were the Watts riiots, black power movement.
