Agent Lenders
|
Acts for any beneficial owner regardless of size, but where the beneficial owner does not wish to, for reasons of cost or size, participate directly. Agent Lenders will tend to be Global Custodians or Asset Managers participating on behalf of a large number of clients. Generally Lenders hold the power and dictate terms of each trade. Borrowers however have a choice of lender and can vote with their feet if a lender makes unreasonable demands.
Deutsche Bank acts as a Borrower and a Direct Lender. In addition to external clients DB also borrows stock to satisfy the requirements of the Internal trading desks. This is treated as a business arrangement, i.e. the Desks are charged a rate for any securities borrowed but also receive fees for any long positions they hold which can be lent out. |

A system provided by Sungard to facilitate Securities Lending. It is the most widely used of any Securities Lending system in the UK. |
In common parlance, a bulge bracket firm is an investment bank considered to be one of the largest and most profitable in the world. |

|

In the markets, to hedge your bets is to adopt a more secure position by limiting your exposure to risk.

Hedge funds
|
A fund, usually used by wealthy individuals and institutions, which is allowed to use aggressive strategies (including leverage, swaps, arbitrage, and derivatives). They are not constrained by the same laws as mutual funds. Hedge funds look to generate returns to investors even when markets are volatile or performing poorly. However, because of the nature of these strategies, a high level of risk is involved.

Leveraged buyout
|

Leveraged finance
|
Finance which takes advantage of the ratio between a company’s debt and equity, often associated with relatively high risk and return.
