Damage Control Assistant (DCA)

Assist the CHENG in anything associated with the ships damage control.

What is the principle source of power on a ship?

Steam

How is steam supplied to the catapults?

Starts in the reactor plants, then goes to the steam receiver/accumulator (where it is stored at a desired pressure), then it is directed to the launching valves which provide power to launch aircrafts.

Used to convert seawater into steam.

Evaporators?

Take in and de-salinate seawater to supply the ship"s feed water, reactor cooling water, water for the crew and etc...

Steam turbine gear drive?

Contains one High pressure turbine and one Low pressure Turbine. Used for propulsion. Low pressure provides reverse propulsion.

State the purpose of the electrohydralic steering gear?

Links the bridge helm to the ship's steering plant.

Bit?

Cyndrical shape of cast iron. Located forward and aft of the chocks and used for delaying mooring lines.

Chock?

A heavy fitting through which mooring lines are fed.

*mooring lines run from bits through chocks to bollards on the pier.

What are the different types of chocks?

Open, closed, rollers

Cleat?

Consist of a pair of horns for delaying lines.

What is the most widely used cleat?

the "A" Cleat

Capstan?

Consist of vertical cylinder, rotated manually by a motor. Used to lift heavy loads by widing a cable or line and for tightning the ships mooring lines.

Chain marking?

A ship's anchor consist of indiviula units called links, which multiple form shots.

Who long is a single shot of anchor chain?

15 Fathoms (6 feet)

Shots are connected and marked how?

Connected with a detachable link. Each painted red, white or blue.

Purpose of chain marking?

To let the detail know exactly how much chain has panned out.

What are the last two colors of shots

Next to last: Yellow

Last: Red

Turns of wires on painted link?

15 fathoms: Red 1,1

30 fathoms: White 2, 2

90 fathoms: blue 6, 6

How are achors defined?

By their stowage location or their contruction.

Where are bower anchors stored?

In the bow and in the hawsepipes.

Where are the stern anchors located?

Carried in the stern of the ship.

What is the most common type of anchors used?

The standard stockless anchor. Uses two standard anchors which are dropped by gravity and raised mechanically.

Chain stopper?

Attached to the chain to prevent the anchor from dropping in the event the anchor brake gives way.

How are chain stoppers attached?

Attached to the ship on one end by a deck fitting and the other end by a pelican hook.

Pelican hook?

Attaches the chain stopper to the ship. It is design to be released by use of a bale or sledge hammer.

Wildcat?

A sproceted hub that guides the anchor chain to the hawespipe.

How is the wildcat driven?

Driven by a large electrical or steam driven motor that is used to turn the capstan when raising the ship's anchor.

Anchor brake?

A friction device that is designed to stop or hold the wildcat shaft, thereby preventing the anchor from dropping.

Underway replensihment (UNREP)

The term used for transfering fuel, ammunition, personnel, etc from one ship to another while underway.

Vertical replenishment (VERTREP)

When supplies are transfered via helicopter to a ship. Transfering personnel is called a PAX.

Connected replenishment (CONREP)

Two ships, side by side, connected with hoses to transfer various supplies.

Officer of the deck (OOD)?

Repsonsible for the safe navigation of the ship, carrying out the POD, and as the CO's representative while underway and ensures all ship board evoloutions are carried out.

Abandon ship procedures?

a. The CO announces the order.

b. The BMOW announces the word.

"abandon ship, all hands make preperations for abandon the ship, the nearest land bears ___ degress magnetic, at a distance of ___ nautical miles. Nearest land is friendly/hostile. Water temperature ____, sea and wind conditions ____.

c. Action of the crew: Proceed to your abandon ship station with your life jacket.

d. Life rafts: Each life raft is equipped with survival and first-aid equipment.

Conning officer?

Works directly with the OOD. Responsible for all steering and engineering orders.

Quatermaster of the watch (QMOW)?

Responsible to the OOD for the safe navigation of the ship using manual and electronic navigation equipment.

What is a breakaway?
A way of separating the receiving and delivering ship from each other.

What is the difference between an emergency and a standard breakaway
They have exactly the same sequence of events but an emergency is done in a more rapid pace.
