What are the signs and symptoms of heart disease?
- Chest pain or pressure (often reported as dullness or an aching or squeezing sensation)
- Radiation of pain to jaw, neck, back or arms - Feel sweaty or clammy - Nausea - Dyspnea - Dizziness (feels like they are passing out) - Heartburn or epigastric pain - Any symptom that is identical to a complaint during a previous proven cardiac event! |
What signs and symptoms are less likely to be cardiac related?
- Dizziness (room spinning)
- Peri oral numbness - Pain radiating into the legs - Tingling in the fingers and face - Sharp stabbing pain with inspiration - Pain reproduced with palpation or position - Rating of cardiac pain on 1-10 scale (often panic attacks can mimic a heart attack) |
What physical signs are indicative of heart conditions?
- Diaphoretic
- Clenching chest (Levine sign) - Rales on lung auscultation - New heart murmurs - S3 Gallop (Floppy Heart) - Jugular Venous Distention - Peripheral Edema - Pulsus alternans - Hypotension and tachycardia |
What is Levine sign?
Clenching chest
What is a tender liver a sign of?
right sided heart failure, the blood backs up into the liver
What are the cardiac risk factors?
- Age
Male > 45 or Female > 55 or premature menopause or hormone replacement therapy - Family History Before age 55 in father or 1st degree male relative or before age 65 in mother or 1st degree female relative - Tobacco abuse More so the more current - Hypertension - Hyperlipidemia - Diabetes Mellitus - Obesity |
Does folic acid, vitamin E, and antioxidents help with cardiovascular disease?
- folic acid lowers the homocyctine levels (but this does not really help)
- there have been shown to not help |
levels of what correspond to increased incidence of ischemic heart disease?
increased inflammation and increased levels of homocystine
increased crp |
most risk factors for ischemic heart disease is amplified by what?
oxidized LDL cholesterol
