Cutaneous Receptors

The types of sensory receptors found in the dermis or epidermis. They are apart of the somatosensory system.

Stimulus Modality

Aka sensory modality. One aspect of a stimulus or what we perceive after a stimulus. For example the temperature modality is registered after heat or cold stimulate a receptor.

Some sensory modalities include: light, sound, temperature, taste, pressure, and smell.

Adequate Stimulus Perception

The awareness or consciousness of the excitation.

Exteroceptors

A sensory receptor that receives external stimuli.

Ex: Eyes (vision), Cochlea (hearing), Taste Buds, Touch receptors, etc.

Interoceptors

A sensory receptor that receives stimuli from within the body, especially from the gut and other internal organs.

Ex: pH sensors, nociceptors (pain), muscle length sensors, muscle tension sensors

Sensory Transduction

Converts the energy of the stimulus into a receptor or generator potential.

Tonic Receptors

Slowly adapting receptors that respond for the duration of a stimulus.

Phasic Receptors

Rapidly adapt to a constant stimulus and turn off. They fire once more when the stimulus turns off.
