the orgin of the salute is uncertain. it is believed to date as far back as roman times when a citizen who wanted to see apublic offical had to raise his right hand to show he had no weapons, as well as knights in armor raised visors with the right hand when meeting a commrad, as a sign of respect. it has since been modified to the hand salute used today.
