what is cultural transmission

the transfer of information from individual to individual through social learning or teaching.

-both within a generation and between generations.

What is a meme?

a unit of cultural information that is passed on from one individual to individual.

what are some examples of cultural transmission within chimps?

-opening nuts with stones.
-swatting flies with leaves.
-squashing parasites with leaves.

What is so special about cultural transmission.

-it differs in regular learning because...

1. the behavior of a single individual has the potential to influence the whole group.

2. more permanence in a population. it is transmitted through generations.

3. behavior can spread through population extremely quickly.

What is social facilitation?

-this is when a model is present but not performing a useful behavior to the observer.

-the observer goes to the area, but only because of the presence of the model.

---this is not really cultural transmission because observer is not learning anything from the models behavior...

Local enhancement.

-this is when the model simply draws attention to some aspect of the environment by its activities there.

----the observer has to notice what the model is doing.

-then, the observer is drawn to the area and might learn about something about that environment on its own by individual learning.

-----this isn't really cultural learning because the observer is not learning anything directly from the model.

what is social learning?

-this is when observers learn specific behaviors from models.

-this is also called observational learning

----this is true cultural transmission because the novel (not previously seen) is observed after seeing another animal do it.
