What is the Aquistion Learning Hypotesis ?
Language Acquition is a subconscious process not unlike the way children learn language. Language acguires are unconsciously of the grammatical rules of language. Thet develop a "Feel" for correctness of their own utterances as their internbal monitor gradually adjusts. The Language Aquirers may not be able to state any specific rules as to why their utterances are correct.
Learning is knowing about language. Aquisition is an uncconscious process.
What is the Natural Order Hypotsis ?
Aqusition of gramatical structure proceeds in a predicatable order but can not be taught to the order.
Focus on the meaning of the message.
predictable order
What is the Monitor Hypothsis ?
The language that one subconsciously aquired "intiates our utterances in the L2 and is responsible for our fluency," whereas the language that we have learned acts as an editor in situations where the learner has enogh time to edit. The learner is focused on the form and knows the rule.
Coscious editor
What is the Input Hypothesis ?
The language aquirer is at level i must receive comprehensiable input that is level i + 1. We aquire language when we understand it. The structure is a little beyond where we are now. We should focus on communication that is understandable. If we do this, & we get enough of that kind of input, then we will in effect be receiving & thus aquiring out i + 1. POroduction ability emerges as it is not taught directly.
how is language aquirered over time ? i + 1
What is the silent period?
Students are building up acquired competence in the L2 before they begin to produce it.
How do toddlers learn their L1? Think of latent children speakers.
What is the Affective Filter Hypothsis ?
Aquistion is more important than learning. Two condtions are necessaary: First- comprehensiable input containg i = 1, structures a bit beyond the learner's current level, & second a low anxity filter to allow input in.
Motivation, selfesteam, self confidence & anxity level
What does i + 1 stand for ?
i the learners current level
1 is the next structure to be aquired in the natral order
input needs to contain structure
What kind of input is optimal for language aquistion ?
It is comprehensiable and has meaning for the learner. The input is slowe & carefully articulated using common vocabulary. Input is interesting or relvant to the learner. Input is personalized. The learner is allowed to focus on the meaning of the message & not the form of the message. The affective filter is low thus allowing input
What is comprehensiable input ?
What are some teaching stratgies for the Natural Approach ?
The teacher may use congnates Students may use their L! or L2 while the teacher uses the L2. Errors in speech are not corrected. Students are encoraged to talk about ideas, perform tasks and solve problems in the L2. Classroom & Homework exercises include grammer just beyond the students level that will be corrected.
Think of Krasen i + 1
