What is the function of a Home signal? |
Control train movements through stations, junctions, at sidings, signal boxes and level crossings. The primary function of a home signal is to protect: facing and trailing points, the fouling point of an adjoining line or crossover. |
Where are two position fixed signals on the ARTC managed network? |
•Through Brooklyn •Departing trains from Newport towards Brooklyn |
What does a two position home signal at proceed indicate? |
Track ahead is clear as far as the next signal. Driver can proceed at normal speed but the indication on the next signal is not known. |
Normal track speed is determined by what? |
•bogies on wagons. •track speed. •weight on wagons. •location of curves and points. •any speed restrictions in place. |
Discuss the 3 occasions when a home signal may be passed at stop. |
•Signal is defective, Verbal Authority from signaller to proceed. •When the home signal is is controlled by a track circuit and a calling on a low speed signal is not provided and a train needs to enter a part of the line that is occupied by a train. •When authorised by a pilot to enter a section where the traffic of a double line is being worked over a single line during repairs or obstruction. |
Interpret two vertical red lights. |
Stop. |
Interpret yellow above a red light. |
Normal Speed Warning. Track section ahead is clear and train may proceed at normal speed, but driver must be prepared to stop at next fixed signal. |
Interpret green above a red. |
Clear Normal Speed. Track section ahead is clear and train may proceed at normal speed. The next fixed signal is displaying a proceed indication. |
Interpret yellow above a green. |
Reduce to Medium. Track section ahead is clear and train may proceed at normal speed but must reduce to medium speed before next fixed signal. |
Interpret yellow above a green. |
Reduce to Medium. Track section ahead is clear and train may proceed at normal speed but must reduce to medium speed before next fixed signal. |
Interpret red over yellow. |
Medium Speed Warning. Track section ahead is clear but the speed of the train must not exceed 40km/h, driver must be prepared to stop at next fixed signal. 40km/h restriction applies to the whole track section to the next fixed signal. |
Interpret red over green. |
Clear Medium Speed. Track section ahead is clear but the speed of the train must not exceed 40km/h. The next fixed signal will display a proceed indication for a medium or normal speed. |
Interpret yellow below two red lights. |
Low Speed Caution. The section of line ahead may be occupied or obstructed. Driver must proceed at low speed (not exceeding 15km/h) prepared to stop short of any obstruction. Points are set for the movement. |
