What is corrosion?

The chemical or electrochemical reaction between a material, usually metal and non metal, and its environment that produces a deterioration of material and its properties

What things are needed for corrosion?

Difference in electrical potential

Anode and cathode

Electrolyte

CONNECTION

Where are electrons lost?

Anode - where oxidation occurs

Where are electrons gained?

Cathode - where reduction occurs

What is galvanic corrosion also referred to as?

Dissimilar metal corrosion

How does the potential difference affect corrosion?

The higher the difference in potential, the faster the corrosion rate

What else can affect corrosion rate?

Corrosion environment

Area of electrode

Distance between the electrode

How does area effect corrosion rate?

If anode has a much smaller area, the current density will be much higher; and the anode will suffer enhanced corrosion

Is large anode and small cathode good?

Is small anode and large cathode good?

Yes

No

How does a coating protect a substrate?

Acts as a cathode - not as reactive to corrosive environment. Noble coatings get corroded away before the material.

What does debris do to a substrate?

Inert debris can protect an area causing the surroundings to become anodic
