Windows feature used to support users with limited sight, hearing, or mobility. It includes special keyboard, sound, display, and mouse configuration.
ACCESSIBILITY OPTIONS
A new Windows feature that allows an administrator to restore server configuration settings in the event that a system cannot be repaired using other methods such as safe mode or last known good configuration.
AUTOMATED SYSTEM RECOVERY (ASR)
The default setting for displaying the Control Panel in Windows XP. Functions and applets are logically grouped together so a user doesn't necessarily need to know which icon to select to perform a task.
CATEGORY VIEW
The original layout of Control Panel which is organized by functional program, so a user has to know which program will make the changes they desire.
CLASSIC VIEW
Small text files placed on a computer by the Web sites that are visited. The files are read by the Web site the next time a user visits the site, and this enables the Web site to keep track of a user's preferences. This way, the Web browsing experience is personalized because sites can remember details such as a logon name, what operating system is used, what version of the media player is running, and what a user prefers to view while visiting.
COOKIES
A feature of Windows XP Home/Professional Editions, available for users who are not members of domains, which makes it possible for users to switch quickly between user accounts without having to actually log off and on, or reboot the computer. Running programs do not need to be closed before switching users.
FAST USER SWITCHING
Software that prevents unauthorized traffic between two networks by examining the IP packets that travels on both networks. Firewalls look at the IP address and type of access the packet requires (such as FTP or HTTP) and determines if that traffic is allowed.
FIREWALL
Run-line tool that will examine the group policies in effect on the computer and the currently logged-on user.
GPRESULT
A feature of the Windows XP operating system that is a firewall that protects a home or small business network that is connected to the internet via a cable, DSL or dial-up modem. Devices that are connected to the internet via a software or hardware router cannot use this feature.
INTERNET CONNECTION FIREWALL (ICF)
An advanced startup option that you can use to recover a system from failed Windows Server 2003 Configuration changes.
LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION
The language that is displayed by Windows XP on the Start Menu, Task Bar and help screens. There are 24 languages for Windows XP - you can also purchase the Multilanguage User Interface version of XP that contains all 24.
LOCALIZATION
A command-line utility that tests connectivity with a remote computer and sends back connection-specific information for each hop a packet takes.
PATHPING
A command-line interface that provides administrative tools useful for recovering a system that is not booting correctly. it allows a user to view disk volumes, format drives, read and write data and perform other administrative tasks.
RECOVERY CONSOLE
The Control Panel utility used to enable and configure multilingual editing and viewing on a localized version of Windows.
REGIONAL AND LANGUAGE OPTIONS
A mechanism for requesting help for x86-based computers through Windows Messenger and email or by sending a file requesting help. To use this, the computer requesting help and the computer providing help must be using Windows XP Professional and must have some sort or interconnectivity.
REMOTE ASSISTANCE
A tool for Windows that allows you to take control of a remote computer's keyboard, video, and mouse. This tool does not require someone collaborate with you on the remote computer. While being access, the computer remains locked and any actions performed remotely will not be visible to the monitor attached to the computer.
REMOTE DESKTOP
Advanced boot option allowing a Windows Server 2003 system to be booted with minimal services or drivers loaded, used for troubleshooting or diagnostic purposes.
SAFE MODE
Policies configured by domain, workgroup, or system administrators. The policies keep the computer and the computing environment secure by limiting what users can and cannot do while logged on to the computer or network.
SECURITY POLICY SETTINGS
The number used in a TCP/IP address scheme that masks off the host portion from the IP address, leaving only the network portion.
SUBNET MASK
A tool used to view the processes and applications currently running on a system. Also provides basic resource usage statistics.
TASK MANAGER
Located by default at the bottom of the desktop, the Taskbar contains the Start button, the System Tray, the Quick Launch bar and buttons for running applications.
TASKBAR
A suite of Internet protocols upon which the Internet is based. This is the default protocol for the Windows Server 2003 family.
TCP/IP
An Advanced Option menu option that loads all major drivers except the video card. Places the display to use 16 colors and a resolution of 640X480.
VGA MODE
Service that provides NetBIOS-name-to-IP-address resolution.
WINDOWS INTERNET NAMING SERVICE (WINS)
An administrative tool that consists of two components: System Monitor and Performance Logs and Alerts. This tool can be used to collect and monitor real-time data as well as to create logs for later review.
