Pronoun

Interjections

express an emotion or pause.

Declarative Sentence

Makes a statement of fact or opinion.


 


Ex: I'm going to the store.

Imperative Sentence

Gives an order to someone.


 


Ex: Don't park there.

Interrogative Sentence

Asks a question.

Exclamatory Sentence

Expresses an emotion or states a fact or opinion strongly.

Clause

A group of words containing a subject and a verb.


Can be independent/main or dependent/subordinate.

Independent Clauses

They can stand alone and make sense as a sentence.


 


Ex: I work at the office, and my husband works at home.


 


Two independent clauses that make sense on their own.

Dependent Clauses

Can support an independent clause but cannot stand alone.


 


Ex: I know why you did that.


"Why you did that" is a dependent clause supporting "I know"

Phrase

A group of words that work together in a sentence but cannot stand alone.


 


Ex: The bicyle leaning against the fence is blue.


 


This is a phrase that cannot stand alone in this sentence.

Subject

A single word or phrase in a sentence that is doing or being something.


 


It can be a person, place, thing or idea.


 


Example of thing: Living in the country was a challenge for them. 


"Living in the country" is the subject.

Predicate

A verb, an action word or phrase.


 


Ex: John is the tallest boy in class.


 


"Is" is the verb.
