procedure steps prior to preparation of the tooth

1. Assist in administration of local anesthetic.

2. If an alginate impression is needed for use in making the provisional or for the opposer (the opposite arch from which the restorative work is to be completed), take it at this time

3. If a stent for making of the provisional is needed, take it at this time. A stent is a small impression of the tooth prior to preparation that is usually made with an alginate impression, bite registration, or a small thermoplastic disc. It is used to make the temporary crown after preparation.

4. If the final impression requires a two-stage silicone impression, take the first stage impression at this time.

5. If the final restoration is tooth colored, take the shade at this time.

Procedure steps for preparation of the tooth

1. Maintain a clear operating field with use of the HVE to retract the lips and tongue and to remove water and debris.

2. The dentist uses diamond burs to quickly cut away decayed or fractured portions of the tooth. Other shaped burs define the appropriate shape of the preparation.

3. The dentist or dental assistant places the gingival retraction cords.

4. Ready the final impression materials.

5. Rinse and dry the preparation.

6. Transfer the cotton pliers to the dentist for cord removal.

7. Assist the dentist or other assistant in placement of the light-body impression materials.

8. Fill the impression tray with heavy-body impression material.

9. Receive the light-body delivery system (usually a syringe or impression gun) from the dentist while delivering to the dentist the impression tray in correct alignment for the dentist to grasp and insert directly onto the prepared area in the patients mouth.

10. Watch the clock for the appropriate setting time according to the recommendations of the impression materials manufacturer.

11. The dentist or the dental assistant can remove the impression tray. Check the state regulations.

12. Rinse the patients mouth. Many impression materials have a poor taste.

13. Take the bite registration.

14. Remove any remaining gingival retraction cords.

15. Fabricate the provisional restoration and cement with temporary cement.

16. Give the patient provisional restoration care instructions.

17. Schedule the patient for the permanent cementation appointment.

18. After the dentist writes the laboratory prescription, prepare the case for delivery to the laboratory technician.
