Location: CD is an inflammatory disease of the small intestine, the colon, or both. |

Appearance:
|
Inflammation occurs in segments. There will be edema and thickening of intestinal mucosa as well as ulcer formation (cobblestone appearance). |

Clinical Manifestations:
|
diarrhea, abdominal pain, low grade fever, steatorrhea (fatty stools), weight loss, and nutritional deficits (anemia, low albumin). |

Complications: SAME AS UC:
|
hemorrhage, abscess formation, toxic megacolon, perforation, malabsorption, bowel obstruction, fistulas, colorectal cancer, extraintestinal complications, and osteoporosis. Table 60-4 |

Diagnosis:
|
CBC, folic acid & vitamin B, albumin, total protein, ESR & C-reactive protein, urinalysis, upper GI series, endoscopy – biopsy, CT scan. |

Treatment: Meds: |
Aminosalicylates or 5-ASA drugs (sulfasalazine and mesalamine), corticosteroids (PO prednisone or IV hydrocortisone), immunomodulators (cyclosporine, methotrexate, infliximab), antidiarrheals (lomotil, Imodium), anti-infectivs. |

Nutrition:
|
TPN, low-residue, high protein high calorie, avoid caffeine, alcohol, and smoking |

|
laparoscopic release of strictures, small bowl or colon resection (ileostomy, colostomy) |
