Terror: psychological, disturbing to the mind, a mind connection with other world or supernatural?

Horror: physical (bloody, bodies cut up, disgusting, full frontal... obviously scary)

Setting

'recesses of own mind'

Unclear difficult, awe and fear of the mighty nature or maginificience that belittles us. (EDMUND BURKE) both beautiful but scary (representation of power and limitations to the humanity)

Trangression

unclear boundaries between classes, society, sexuality, gender, religion, history, uncertain, overcoming of boundaries/pressuring the boundaries (Macbeth: good or evil? was he just led on by his wife and witches?)

Forbidden Knowledge

archaic and obscure, ocult knowledge (Illuminati?) hidden and taboo (a power within god's works) Struggle of humanity of what is unknown? (Macbeth and the witches foreseeing the future)

Life and Death

blur of life death and the undead, ghost and phantoms: past coming back, Death- blessing or curse? death= temporary and terrifying, notion of coming back

Hero Villain

having attributes of both good and bad (hence anti hero because despite having some factors similar to a hero, they have villainious qualities) Macbeth? Archaic values and diginities and feudal aristocracy

Satanic

Rebellion against god and conformity and authority. Subject of god and king? protype= misguide of power and less, unnessary brutal: figure of humanity not conforming to power

Vampire

old, unkillable (persistance of values and morality and history). Dracula: myths, legends, Eastern European politics ATT, historical figues (countess Elizabeth and Vlad the Impaler), fear of out of control desires, body and feelings gone out of boundaries, instictual and marriage and return of repressed memories, dreams and ambitions coming back to haunt (Marquis???)

Past and the Inherited

Revenge, inheritance, historical, suffering the wrath of a past sin by forefathers? unclear, 'family ghosts' biblical: sins of father: revisited upon you: suffer in presence, family inheritance

Class

relationship of class and aristocratic (unable to die) and middle class taking authority, fear of impossibilities to overcome the past structures?

Revenge

Question of older forms: tragedies and critically unable to acheive (reconcillation vs resolvement), becoming what we are avenging in the process of avenging. (revenging on a monster but becoming one in the process)- past injustice

Gothic woman

early gothic: place of women (arguable) persecuted, innocent, meek, timid, overun by men, little to no power, rescued. Conflict of older women vs younger women. Change in characters= reflection of culture and society? Subservient roles? Carter: approach remakes women's fantasy and desires even in imminent danger, taming or addressing or domesticating fears and becoming agents of own right?
