alcohol abuse

a formal term used in the DSM IV that refers to drinking that leads to impairment in functioning in one or more areas. This person abusing alcohol may also be drinking for psychological comfort.

AA

the original 12 step group founded in 1935 in which members focus on putting their belief for recovery from alcoholism in a higher power and the support of the group.

alcohol dependence

a term from the DSM IV referring to a condition in which a person is physically addicted to alcohol and would suffer withdrawal symptoms if he or sh were to quit drinking.

amotivational syndrome

a term used to describe a chronic marijuana smoker's lack of initiative and drive

aversive conditioning

a behavioral approach to help drug addicts and alcoholics quit by pairing the substance with a noxious stimulus such as emetine, electric shock or dirty water. Formerly used frequently at Schick centers.

bottoming out

a term used when an addict's use has caused so many consequences in his life that he can barely function

codependent

significant other involved with a substance abuser and the controlling and helping behaviors associated with this family member or friend.

depersonalized

this often occurs during a trip on LSD or when someone is coming down from crystal meth. the individual no longer perceives himself as the person he used to be or feels no sense of being a person.

derealized

this can occur while coming dow or tripping on LSD. the user does not perceive reality as a stable or consistent with the usual way reality has been viewed.

detoxification

cleaning a person's system of a drug. Usually takes 3-5 days for the substance to be flushed out of the body. Often needs to occur in a hospital setting.

enabler

the nonusing member in a family who encourages or helps the substance abuser continue to use.

fix

slang term for the dose or unit of consumption of a drug addict. most commonly associated with heroin addicts.

pseudopsychotic

a condition when someone is either using LSD or coming down from a meth or cocaine binge. he or she may become delusional and not experience himself or herself or the world in a normal way.

synanon

a type of treatment for addicts that relies on confrontation and a strong social support network to change the user's lifestyle

tolerance

resistance to a drug. more and more needed to get high.

12-step programs

considered the most effective model in treating substance abuse. based on AA.

withdrawal

symptoms experienced when a user stops taking a drug. physical and psychological symptoms can happen which are very unpleasant.
