Explain the meaning of flash guide numbers
Guide number is a way to compare the relative light output of different flash units. GN/distance = f/stop
How can you determine which guide numbers of flashes are best suited for crime scene photography?
Larger guide numbers should be used as they allow for smaller apertures, and thus greater depth of field.
Is there just one sync speed a camera can use with a particular flash?
No
Can shutter speeds faster or slower than the designated sync speed be used?
It is possible to use a slower shutter speed than the sync speed. Using a faster shutter speed will result in a portion of the image being blacked out by the shutter closing while the flash is still firing.
Explain when it would be better to use manual flash mode as opposed to automatic or dedicated flash mode?
Manual flash provides the right lighting level for the flash-to-subject distance, so that reflectivity of the subject does not matter.
In what circumstances would you use "fill-in flash"?
When part of the scene is lit by strong ambient light, and parts are in deep shadow.
Bounce flash produces dim light on the subject. Explain how to determine a proper exposure when using bounce flash.
Estimate the bounce to subject distance and set the camera to 2 f/stops wider than the recommended distance
Explain the difference between using the PWL technique from one side, and using the PWL technique from two sides.
Using PWL from one side requires that the entire width of the scene be lit from one side. The gaps along the "safe" sideline are lit by flashes directed diagonally across the scene.
Explain when PWL would be the preferred technique.
Whenever a single flash would be inadequate for a large, dimly-lit scene.
What is the rule of thumb for using manual flash outdoors?
Manual flash used outdoors should be set at least one stop brighter than what is suggested using the flash calculator dial. This is because the flash calculator assumes that there will be reflected light from a "normal room".
What is the rule of thumb for using an electronic flash at close distances (less than 5')?
At close distances, the flash should be removed from the camera so it may be more properly aimed at the subject.
What is the rule of thumb for replacing the batteries in an electronic flash?
If the flash recycle time exceeds 30 seconds, the batteries should be replaced.
What is the process for using fill-in flash?
• Set the shutter to the sync speed
• Meter the brightly lit portion of the scene
• Set the f/stop for the correct exposure of the bright portion
• Set the flash to manual mode
• Move the flash head to the distance shown for f/stop selected
• Aim the flash at the shadowed area
