Crime Prevention = Risk Reduction

The attempt to reduce and deter crime and criminals

Specifically speaks to efforts made by police and the community to prevent crime

Henry Fielding 1750

Father of crime prevention

Had two goals

- stamp out crime

- prevent crime in the future

Three things must be present for a crime to be committed

Desire

Ability

Opportunity

Desire

We as citizens can not effect or remove a criminals desire to commit a crime. If someone really wants to commit a crime they will.

Ability

We can not effect the ability of a criminal to commit a crime. They will find a way. they can thousands away, use telephones, internet... Not even physical impairment will stop some from committing crimes.

Opportunity

It is at this point that we can take the appropriate action to prevent crime. By removing the criminals opportunity for crime to occur through education, we have broken the "Crime Prevention Triangle" cycle.

CPTED (Sept-Ted)

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design

Three Principles of CPTED

1. Natural access control

2. Natural surveillance

3. Territorial reinforcement

Natural Access Control

Refers to the use of doors, fencesand gates to control access to your business or property. The intention is notto necessarily physically stop the offender, but rather make your business looklike a riskier crime target.

Natural Surveillance

Involves designing windows, lightingand landscaping to improve your ability, and everyone else's ability, toobserve what is going on inside and around your business. Through clever designyou can not only make your business a less attractive target, you can increasethe likelihood of detecting a criminal at work.

Territorial Reinforcement

Territorialreinforcement uses design and use of sidewalks, landscaping, and porches tocreate a border between private and public property. These are not meant toprevent anyone from physically entering, but to create a feeling ofterritoriality and send a message to offenders that the property belongs tosomeone and they should stay out.
