Why some Christians are AGAINST capital punishment

-It ceases an opportunity of forgiveness; an act Jesus did to his executioners when he was on the cross
-It contradicts the golden rule. The golden rule would therefore suggest to seek less harmful forms of punishment. -It contradicts 'Love thy neighbour', from Jesus. -Human life is sacred (sanctity of life) and therefore no earthly power can take lives. Doing so would be considered murder. |

-Bible has passages promoting death as a consequence - James 13:4 - 'If you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason.' -Genesis 1:27 - 'God created mankind in his image' - gives them the same right to take lives. -God gave humans free will and they may face capital punishment as discipline for crimes committed. |

-Shari'ah Law can be used incorrectly by governments
and people, resulting in unfair treatment of people. Goes against Qur'an 5:42 - 'Allah loves those who act justly' -Some Muslim scholars have said that society is different in today's age, therefore CP is no longer appropriate. Leading authorities on Islamic Law, Muslims should follow its teachings. -On occasions, capital punishment has been used on innocent people, making it murder and this is haram (sinful). -There are better forms of punishment (i.e life sentences) |

-'And do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed] except by legal right.' - Qur'an 6:151 - meaning it can be used when it is legally required.
-Prophet Muhammad sentenced people to death for murder, which implies he allowed it in extreme cases. -Allah gave humans free will and they may face capital punishment as discipline for crimes committed. -Shariah Law staes that capital punishment can be used for crimes including murder and for 'spreading mischief in the land'. The Shariah law is the holy law of Islam. |

Why justice is important for Christians.

-It ensures people are treated fairly - Proverbs 18:5 'It is not good to be partial to the wicked and so deprive the innocent of justice' -The Bible teaches that justice is to be maintained. -Genesis 1:27 - 'God created mankind in his image' |

Why justice is important for Muslims

-One of the five pillars of Islam enforce justice by making Muslims give Zakah (charity).
-They will be judged on judgement day and rewarded for justice -Muslims form part of the Ummah and so should treat their brothers ad sisters with justice in order for the community to remain intact. -Qur'an 6:152 - 'give full measure and weight in justice...And when you testify, be just, even if [it concerns] a near relative' |

Why some Christians are FOR drinking alcohol

-They are taught it is a gift from God. Genesis 27:28 'May God give you heavens due and earth's richness - an abundance of grain and wine' God has provided the world with lots of it, intending for it to be used and enjoyed
-Last Supper, Jesus said to do this in memory of him -Jesus drank and turned water into wine. -Alcohol is used as a symbol of blessing in the Old Testament. |

-Could lead to legal issues such as drunk driving
-The body of is the temple of the Holy Spirit, could be interfering with one's faith in God and Christ. -Addiction can lead to the physical/emotional break up of marriage and the family unit. Timothy 5:4 -Lead to hangovers which could interfere with a person's relationship with God (e.g. Not praying or going to church) |

Why Muslims are AGAINST drinking alcohol

-Prophet Muhammad condemned it, teaching that is was Haram.
-The Body is a gift from God and should not be altered. - could be seen as misusing/damaging Allah's gift to the individual. -Could lead to legal issues such as drunk driving -Can interfere relationship with Allah - Qur'an 4:43 - 'Do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying', meaning Muslims should be in a clear state of mind when communicating with Allah. |
