Black act (1732)

The black act of (1732)- act passed in response to a series of raids by blacked face poachers. introduced the death penalty for over 50 criminal offences- including 'being found in a forest whilst disguised'.


No act as severe in 19th century.


Repealed on 1823

Acts and laws

Bloody code- English system of capital punishment in (late 1600 to early 1700 ). increased the number of death penalty offences to over 200- arbitrary treatment for many meaningless crimes.


'Smugglerius' - roman sculpture of 'dying gaul' after being flayed and hanged. Recast during bloody code to represent severity of judicial system.


Anatomy act

Anatomy act- (1832)- Gave free license to doctors, autonomy scholars and medical students to dissect bodies - as could previously only use the bodies of executed murderers- Murder Act.
