Compromise
To settle a dispute by agreeing to give up a part that he or she demands.
Sovereignty
Freedom from outside interference and the right to self-government.
Virginia Plan
New federal constitution that would give sovereignty, or supreme power, to the central government.
New Jersey Plan
Unicameral, or one house legislature. The plan gave each state an equal number of votes, thus an equal voice, in the federal government.
Three-Fifths Compromise
This agreement stated that each slave would be counted as three-fifths of a person when determining representation.

An idea that political authority belongs to the people.
