The basic unit that makes up all living things.
Diffusion
Movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
Osmosis
Water passing through a cell membrane.
Flagellum
A long whip like structure that moves an organism by spinning like a propeller.
Reproduce
Producing more of their kind of species.
Binary fission
A simple form of reproduction where an organism makes a copy of its genetic information and then divides.
Budding
A small knob, or bud, forms on the parent cell that contains the same genetic information. This bud grows and then breaks off.
Louis Paseur
Discovered heating beverages kills bacteria.
Kingdoms
Six large groups of living things.
Bacteria

Single celled organisms that do not contain a nucleus or organelles surrounded by a membrane. (Bacteria)

Protist
Single-celled organism with a membrane, nucleus, and other organelles. (Amoebas, paramecia, and algae)
Fungi
Multicellular organism that absorbs food from the surface on which it lives. (Mushrooms, mold, and yeast)
Plants
Organisms that are able to use sunlight to make food in a process called photosynthesis.
Animals
Complex, multicellular organisms that get energy by eating other organisms.
Invertebrate
An animal without a backbone.
Vertebrate
An animal with a backbone.
Tissues
A large group of similar specialized cells.
Organ
A group of related tissues that perform a specific function. (Heart, lungs, liver)

Respiratory system

Responsible for bringing oxygen into the body and expelling carbon dioxide.

Circulatory system

Responsible for bringing oxygen and nutrients to all the cells of an animal's body by moving blood.

Digestive system
Breaks down food into simpler substances.
Nervous system
Receives and processes information and controls how the body reacts and moves.
Muscular system
Works with the skeletal system to move the body.
cilia

Small hairs that move back and forth allowing an organism to move or gather food.
skeletal system
bones of this system support the body and protect organs
