Olfactory Nerve (I)

SENSORY.


- SA Fibers for smell.


- Through Cribriform plate of ethmoid bone.

Optic Nerve (II)

SENSORY.


- SA Fibers for vision.


- Connects the retina to the diencephalon.


- Through Optic Canal.


- The only cranial nerve considered to be part of the CNS, which enas it can't regenerate.

Oculomotor Nerve (III)

MOTOR.


- GSE Fibers: Levator palpebrae superioris; sup. + inf. + medial recti; inf. oblique


- GVE Fibers: Sphincter Pupillae; Ciliary Muscles.


- Through Superior Orbital Fissure

Trochlear Nerve (IV)

MOTOR.


- GSE Fibers: Sup. Oblique.


- Only nerve to exit on the post. surface of the brainstem.


- Through Superior Orbital Fissure

Trigeminal Nerve (V)

BOTH.


- terminal branches: Ophthalmic (V1); Maxillary (V2); Mandibular (V3)


- Ophthalmic:


- GSA: eyes, conjunctiva, lacrimal glands, nasal cavities, frontal and ethmoidal sinuses.


- Through Superior Orbital Fissure


- Maxillary:


- GSA: dura, nasopharynx, palate, upper part of face.


- Through Foramen Rotundum


- Mandibular: Only one w/ motor component.


- GSA: lower face, external ear, external acoustic meatus


- BE: Tensor Tympani, tensor veli palatini, anterior belly of digastric, Mylohyoid and muscles of mastication.



Abducens Nerve (VI)

MOTOR.


- GSE Fibers: lateral rectus


- Through Superior Orbital Fissure


- If injured there is inability to deviate the eyeball away from the midline of the body.

Facial Nerve (VII)

BOTH.


- GSA: External Acoustic Meatous, deep auricle


- SA: Anterior 2/3 of the tongue


- GVE: Stimulate activity of glands + sensory of palates


- BE: Muscles of the face from 2nd Pharyngeal Arch




Divides into:


- motor root: BE


- sensory root: (Intermediate Nerve): SA


- Parasympathetic: GVE + GSA




- Through Stylomastoid foramen

Vestibulocochlear Nerve (VIII)

SENSORY


From Bipolar sensory neurons in vestibular ganglion.




- Vestibular Division: Balance


- Cochlear Division: Hearing

Glossopharyngeal Nerve (IX)

BOTH.


- GVA: Carotid Body and Sinus


- GSA: Post. 1/3 of tongue


- SA: Taste of Post. 1/3 of tongue


- GVE: Parasympathetic + Parotid Gland


- BE: Stylopharyngeous (From 3rd Arch)




- Through Jugular Foramen

Vagus Nerve (X)

BOTH.


- GVA: Aortic Body + Arch; Viscera


- GSA: Larynx; Laryngopharynx; Auricle; External Acoustic Meatus; Dura Mater


- SA: Taste around Epiglottis


- GVE: Parasympathetic


- BE: Palatoglossus + Muscles of the soft palate, pharynx and larynx.




- Through Jugular Foramen.

Accessory Nerve (XI)

MOTOR.


- GSE: Sternocleidomastoid + Trapezius




- Through Jugular Foramen

Hypoglossal Nerve (XII)

MOTOR.


- GSE: Muscles of the tongue.




- Through Hypoglossal Canal.
