What does CPU stand for? |
Central Processing Unit. |
Who are the two main manufacturers of CPUs? |
AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) and Intel (INTegrated ELectronics). There are others, like IBM, but those only make up a very small percent, and you would never put one of those in a custom build. |
What are advantages Intel has over AMD? |
Intel chips tend to run cooler, more efficiently, and are updated more often. |
What are the two types of CPU pin-outs? Which company uses which? |
Intel uses LGA (Land Grid Array, pins on the motherboard), AMD uses PGA (Pin Grid Array). Both of these are classified as ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) sockets. |
What is hyper-threading? |
Splitting one core into two threads, rather than one. |
What is the memory controller in the CPU? |
It allows the CPU to know whether or not it needs to send the data to the RAM. |
What is the unit of measurement regarding speed? |
Gigahertz. |
What does a gigahertz represent? |
One billion cycles per second. |
What is a cycle? |
The process by which a computer retrieves a program instruction from its memory, determines what actions the instruction requires, and carries out those actions. |
True or false: All modern 3.5 GHz CPU's with the same amount of cores and threads perform identically. |
False. Modern CPUs may perform cycles more efficiently than others, even though they both produce the same amount of cycles. |
What is overclocking? |
Editing the BIOS to force more volts to the CPU (or GPU) to increase performance. |
What are the differences between an Intel i3, i5, and i7? |
i3s are for web surfing. i5s are for light-moderate gaming, and i7s are for hardcore gaming, media editing, 3D modeling, etc. |
What is an Intel Xeon, and when would you implement one? |
A CPU meant to run at 100% capacity 24/7, used in computers where stability is key, such as in servers. Slower than Core CPUs. |
What is the TJunction? |
The maximum temperature a CPU or GPU will allow itself to hit before it shuts itself down. |
What letter at the end of an Intel CPU indicates for it to be overclockable? |
K. |
