Effective Cough

Full lung of air. Can cough good. If you can see the object is not in the back of the throat you can try to grab it out. If it is in the back then you don't grab it because it might get farther lodged in the throat.

Ineffective Cough

No air going in or out. Not a full lung of air. Take the choking person and set them on your knee. They will lie on their stomach with their butt above their head making it so that the force of gravity can dislodge the object. You will need to deliver 5 back blows to them in between the shoulder blades with your wrists. You can also do 5 chest thrusts if the back blows don't work. If these don't work you go back to back blows. If this doesn't work you need to call the ambulance immediately.

CPR FOR BABIES

The point of CPR is to keep the blood circulating around the baby's body so that the brain does not lose oxygen. If the blood does not circulate brain damage will occur.

CPR FOR BIGGER CHILDREN (1-8 y.o.)

If the child is on the ground unconscious you do not move them! You need to look for the child's chest rise and fall, check to see if they are breathing, and check if they are blue. If they are start Compressions. Put your hand on the child's sternum bone in the middle of the child's chest. You need to take around half a breath if the child is half your size, you need to open the airway, pinch their nose, and breathe in. You will need to do thirty compressions and then rescue breaths. Repeat.

D

D = Danger – Check for possible dangers.

R

R = Response - If the child is not answering move to the next step.

S

S = Send For Help – You need to call 911 if they don't respond. Tell the people in a calm voice where you are.

A

A = Airway – You need to open the baby's airway. Get a firm surface underneath the child and lift their chin towards the ceiling. They can be pulled to their side to get the choking hazard out.

B

B = Breathing – Babies stomachs rise and fall when they breathe. Make sure the baby is breathing. Look at its stomach. Feel to see if they are breathing. If they turn blue they are not breathing. Place baby on their side to get choking hazard out. If the baby isn't breathing, is unconscious, or blue.

C

C = Compressions - To do compressions you need to find the sternum bone or 1/3 of the dip of the chest. You need 100 compressions per minute. Use Stayin' Alive by the Bee Gees as a way to tell how to get 100 compressions. You need to open the baby's airway, get a cheek full of air, and cover their mouth and nose with your mouth and breathe into their mouth and nose. If this doesn't work you need help. Get help now. You need it. Call the neighbors. Call 911. You need help. 30 compressions then breath. Repeat until help arrives.
