What did the Greek EPIC prospective cohort study conclude?
Moderate consumption of ethanol, low consumption of meat and meat products, and high consumption of vegetables, fruits, nuts, olive oil, and legumes.
What is the relationship between lean meat and heart health?
Lean red meat and trimmed of visible fat does not raise total blood cholesterol and LDL -cholesterol levels. A diet low in saturated fat does not increase cardiovascular risk factors (plasma cholesterol level or thrombotic risk factors)
What does a diet of high saturated fat usually include?
Fast foods, snack foods, oils, spreads, other processed foods, and meat with visible fat, NOT lean meat.
What is the DASH diet and what does it say about the relationship between sodium intake & arterial blood pressure?
Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension..

1. Sodium restriction in hypertensive patients reduces blood pressure
2. the long term impact of reduced salt intake on blood pressure, mobidity, and mortality remains to be defined
If you put someone on a long term salt restricted diet, what do you need to supplement them with?
Iodine because they could become hypothyroid
What is interesting about cheese consumption between men and women?
Cheese may be healthier for women than men because
1. in women more frequent cheese consumption was associated with higher HDL-C and lower LDL-C
2. in mean more cheese consumption was associated with a higher BMI, waist circumference, HDL-C and LDL-C, and diastolic blood pressure.
What did the Gissi Prevenzione study find out about fish oil and how does it compare to a more recent study?
850mg of EPA/DHA daily could significantly reduce death, cardiac death, nonfatal MI and stroke in patients. Reccents studies now show that this may not be true for post MI people.
What is the relationship between marine omega-3-fatty acids and telomeres?
Inverse relationship, fish oils keep telomeres longer, so people live longer
What is the relationship between egg consumption and cardiovascular disease?
1. infrequent egg consumption does not seem to influence risk of CVD in male physicians. Egg consumption is positively related to mortality, especially in diabetics
2. Infrequent egg consumption is not associated with the risk of HF, however, egg consumption of > or = to 1 per day is related to an increased risk of HF among US male physicians
3. in diabetics, there was in increased risk of coronary artery disease associated with higher egg consumption
Why is extra virgin olive oil good for human health?
it is a MUFA, has low saturated fat content, and it has microcomponents that promotes antioxidant and less prothrombotic effects, with a greater endothelial protective capacity. It is NOT only the oleic acid in olive oil that makes it healthy.
How much vit D should you have per day and when should you get a blood test to check for toxicity?
a serum 25(OH)D of 60ng/ml is optimal for most people, 30 is sufficient, 15 or less is insufficient. Low levels as associated with higher risk of MI.

If you take more than 4,000 IU/day, you can get a serum test to check for toxicity.
