Specialty
The area of expertise in which a doctor practices, i.e., orthopedics, gynecology, family practice, cardiology,
et cetera.
Board certified
Comprehensive examinations for physicians, containing written and oral segments. Physicians may be Board certified in many different branches of medicine by virtue of passing these examinations.
Intern/Internship
A medical graduate who works in a hospital setting prior to being licensed to practice medicine. Internship is the period of time the medical graduate works in the hospital setting.
Resident/Residency
A graduate and licensed physician receiving training in one or more specialties in a hospital.
Syndrome
A group of symptoms occurring together
Subjective Symptom
The patient's evidence or perception concerning his condition. Example: My right leg feels numb.
Objective Symptom
A symptom that is evident to the observer or physician. Example: The pinprick tests revealed the patient had no feeling in her right leg.
Presenting Symptoms
The symptom(s) about which a patient complains upon first presenting to a physician. Example: The patient first presented with complaints of numbness in her right leg & pain in her low back.
Diagnose
To identify or recognize a disease.
Diagnosis
Determination of the nature of a disease or the distinguishing of one disease from another (Diagnoses is the plural of diagnosis.)
Differential diagnosis
The determination of which one of several diseases may be producing the symptoms.
Prognosis
An opinion regarding the probable course a disorder may take and the eventual outcome of the disorder.
