What is low road processing?
runs through the amygdala, primarily out of conscious awareness, extracts emotional meaning from nonverbal messages (speechless)
What is high road processing?
runs through higher order neural systems, available to speech centers (conscious), tends to be rational
What is primal empathy?
– feeling with others, sensing non-verbal emotional signals (low road)
What is attunement
Attunement – listening with full receptivity
What is empathic accuracy?
– understanding another’s thoughts, feelings, and intentions (low and high road)
What is social cognition?
knowing how social world works
What is synchrony?
interacting smoothly at non-verbal level (low road)
What is self presentation?
– presenting self effectively
What is influence?
– shaping the outcome of social interactions (low and high road)
What is concern?
– caring about others’ needs and acting accordingly
What are the benefits of full listening?
-maximizes physiological synchrony, so emotions align
-orients our neural circuits for connectivity, puts us on the same wavelength -maximizes likelihood of synchrony and positive feelings, leading to rapport |
What are the benefits of empathic accuracy?
-The essential expertise in social intelligence
-Builds on primal empathy, but adds explicit understanding of others feelings & thoughts (prefrontal area of neocortex) -Brings high road circuitry to low road primal empathy. |
What are social cognitions and their benefits?
-What we know about interpersonal world
-Without social facility, can still be awkward -Social awareness – builds on empathic accuracy, which builds on listening and primal empathy, foundation for social facility |
What does synchrony require us to do?
requires us to read nonverbal cues instantaneously and act on them smoothly
What is dyssemia?
deficit in reading nonverbal cues (in rare cases, due to autism or Asperger’s syndrome). Usually a failure to learn to read important social cues.
What is self presentation?
“control and mask” expression of emotion
What is constructive influence?
– expressing self in socially effective way
What do you use social awareness for?
Use social awareness to guide actions to achieve desired results, put limitations on expressivity
What is social intelligence and why does it matter?
-Concern – empathy alone matters little unless we’re willing to act
-Related to physiological arousal by distress in others -Reflects one’s capacity for compassion |
We can educate the low road by?
-We can get better at primal empathy and decoding nonverbal signals, with accurate feedback
-Respond to microexpressions -Can make us better counselors |
