Positive Correlation
One variable increases and so does the other. Strength of correlation- perfect= +1
Negative Correlation
Measurement of one variable increases, the other variables decreases. Strength of correlation- perfect= -1
Strengths of Correlational Analysis
No manipulation of behaviour required- researcher merely measures and compares them, so fewer ethical problems. Enables precise and statistical analysis of degree of relationship- where experimental manipulation is not practical/possible
Weaknesses of Correlational Analysis
No cause and effect can be inferred. Since the researcher hasn't deliberately manipulated the variables we can't know which one is affecting the other or if it's being affected by a third
