Coordinate system
The Coordinate system is the intersection of a horizontal and vertical number lines. You can locate points using the coordinate system.
x-y coordinate plane
The x-y coordinate plane is based on two number lines.
x-axis
The horizontal line is the x-axis.
y-axis
The vertical line is the y-axis.
quadrants
The axes divide the plane into 4 quadrants numbered I, II, III, IV. The quadrants are numbered counter-clockwise beginning in the upper right with I.
ordered pair
Any point is described by an ordered pair. The first number, the x-coordinate, tells you how far to the left (for a negative number) or right (for a positive number) of the origin the point is. The second number, the y-coordinate, tells you how far to the up (for a positive number) or down (for a negative number) of the origin the point is.

origin
The intersection of the x-axis and the y-axis is called the origin. (0,0)
