What is FSH
Follicle stimulating hormone
What does FSH do
stimulates the development of follicles in the ovary and stimulates them to produce oestrogen
What does oestrogen do
causes the rebuilding of the uterus lining after menstruation
What is LH
leuteinising hormone
What does LH do
causes ovulation to occur and stimulates the ovary to produce progesterone
What does progesterone do
maintains the lining of the uterus in readiness to receive the fertilised egg and inhibits the production of FSH
What is released from the pituitary gland
FSH and LH
What is released by the ovaries
Oestrogen and Progesterone
Where exactly is progesterone released from
corpus luteum
What does oestrogen inhibit and stimulate
low amounts inhibit LH and FSH, but high amounts stimulate LH and FSH
What does FSH stimulate
Oestrogen
what does LH stimulate
Progesterone
What does progesterone inhibit
inhibits LH and FSH
What happens on day 1
the pituitary gland releases FSH into the blood which stimulates follicles in the ovary to grow and mature
What does the follicle do once released
secretes oestrogen into the blood causing uterus lining to build up again and inhibits FSH and LH
as the follicle grows what happens
more oestrogen is released and it reaches a critical point where it stimulates the release of FSH and LH
what happens when there is a surge in FSH and LH
LH causes the ovary to release an egg, this is ovulation
what happens after ovulation
LH stimulates the empty follicle to develop into a corpus leteum which secretes progesterone
what is an example of negative feedback
when low levels of oestrogen inhibit FSH and LH
