Family planning involves:

Methods of contraception:

Barrier method of contraception: Chemical barriers:
Spermicides, creams or gels, tablets, suppositories, vaginal film. 26% failure rate if used alone.
Mechanical barriers:
Placed over penis or cervix. Condom, sponge, diaphragm, and cervical cap. Condom avg failure rate is 15%
Female condom:

Diaphragm:
Avg failure rate 16%. Acts as a barrier to sperm to prevent fertilization. Must be refitted after each pregnancy or weight change of 10 lbs.

Based on timing ovulation approx 14 days before onset of menses. (Catholics)
Sympto-Thermal method:
Avg failure rate: 16%. Temp taken every morning before rising and record. After ovulation, it will rise by at least 0.5 degrees and is often above 98 degrees.
