Great Compromise

An agreement that large and small states met at. And made a second house in congress. The first house get representation based on the population of the state called the Senate. The second house would get equal representation from each state called the House of Representatives (large or small).

Article 5

Describes if the constitution can be altered and how it can be done. When the government alters the constitution it is called a amendment.

3/5 Compromise

A compromise the north and south met at. Because of this compromise each slave will be considered 3/5 of a person instead of 1 or 0.

Electoral College

A process that the founding fathers made to elect the President. This is because the people of those times where not educated very well.

The begging of the constitution.

3 Branches of Goverment

Executive Branch- They have the power to sign or veto a bill.


Judicial Branch- They interpret the laws meaning and applies them to individual cases.


Legislative Branch- Made up of the Senate and House of Representatives. They also vote on bills and declare war.

Presidential Powers

The power to sign bills and vet bills, command the armed forces, ask for an opinion from the cabinet, and give pardons

Congressional Powers

Vote on bills and make them a law if they're needed.

U.S. Supreme Court

They interpret the law, decide if the laws are constitutional, and make court decisions that the whole nation has to follow. For example Gay Marriage being legal

Consent of the Governed

The state government has to have the consent of the people to use political power in the states.

1st Amendment

Deals with freedom of speak, freedom to assemble, and freedom to petition the government if it is legit.

Amending Process/Elastic Clause

Grants congress the power to alter or amend the Constitution.

Political Parties

An organization of people hoping to achieve common goals.

Checks and Balances

This limits each branch of government's power.

Rights of Acused

The right to trial by jury, a timely trial, and the right to know what their being accused of.

Bill of Rights

The name of the first 10 amendments in the Constitution. Stating the rights of the people.

Judicial Review

The legislative and executive branches actions are reviewed by the judicial branch.

Article 7

States that all 13 states need to ratify the constitution.
