Key terms

Conservation:actively managing ecosystems in order to increase biodiversity

Monoculture: large fields growing only a single crop

Land use

Agricultural is important to provide plentiful and cheap food

●due to intensive farming yield has doubled in last fifty years

●unfortunately intensive farming techniques often result in lower g the biodiversity

Intensive farming techniques

Clearing woodland-to increase land for cultivation but it reduces number of trees & reduces the variety of habitats leafing to a decrease in animal diversity

diversity

Spraying Pesticides- on crops to kill invertebrates which eat it

This kills not only the pest but also pollinating insects, insects are part of food chain so larger animals like birds & hedgehogs have less to eat & reduce in numbers

Removing hedge rows- to enlarge field & increase are available, hedges can also compete with arable crops for light. Leads to loss of habitats for wildlife & a reduction in insects & birds. Hedges also acts as roads for animals to move around safely and to meet animals from other areas and mate Spraying herbicides- to kill weeds which compete with the crop plant, thus kills plants at the bottom of the food chain, animals higher up the food chain die due to lack of foodGrowing monoculture- (just 1 crop) over a large area greatly reduces the variety of habitats & biodiversityImproving grazing land- by sowing ryegrass & clover species which provide cows & sheep's with nutrientsFertilising the fields increases the growth of the ryegrass which out competes lower growing weed speciesDraining the land also favours the growth of the ryegrass but leads to a big reduction In weed species & a loss of habitats for invertebrates & small mammals

Conservation measures

●environmental stewardship scheme encores farmers to replant hedgerows & to leave margins around their fields to act as wildlife habitats & corridors

●the EU has banned the use of various insecticides which have a disproportionate effect on non-pest species such as bees

●endangered species such as the hen harrier are protected & killing them is a criminal offence

●Intensive agricultural developments is restricted in areas which have been declared National Parks (eg lake district)
