What type of tissue is this?
What type of tissue is this?
Areolar connective tissue
What type of tissue is this?
What type of tissue is this?
Adipose connective tissue
Describe areolar connective tissue. What is its function? Location?
Describe areolar connective tissue. What is its function? Location?
Description: A gel-like matrix with all 3 fiber types. Contains fibroblasts, macrophages, mast cells, white blood cells.

Function: Wraps and cushions organs, macrophages "eat" bacteria, plays role in inflammation

Location: widely distributed under epithelia of body, mucous membranes, packages organs, surrounds capillaries
What type of tissue is this?
What type of tissue is this?
Reticular connective tissue
Describe reticular connective tissue. What is its function? Location?
Describe reticular connective tissue. What is its function? Location?
Description: A network of reticular fibers in a loose ground substance

Function: Its fibers form a soft internal skeleton that supports other cell types

Location: Lymphoid organs (lymph nods, bone marrow spleen)
Describe adipose connective tissue. What is its function? Location?
Describe adipose connective tissue. What is its function? Location?
Description: Closely packed fat cells, nucleus is pushed to side by large fat droplet/vacuole. Has "ring" like appearance

Function: Insulates against heat loss, provides reserve food fuel, supports and protects organs

Location: Under skin in hypodermis, in breasts, abdomen, around kidneys & eyeballs
What type of tissue is this?
What type of tissue is this?
Dense irregular connective tissue
Describe dense irregular connective tissue. What is its function? Location?
Describe dense irregular connective tissue. What is its function? Location?
Description: Irregularly arranged collagen fibers (no pattern), cell type: fibroblast

Function: Withstands tension applied in many directions; provides structural strength

Location: Dermis of skin, fibrous capsules of organs and joints
What type of tissue is this?
What type of tissue is this?
Dense regular connective tissue
Describe dense regular connective tissue. What is its function? Location?
Description: Primary collagen fibers that are packed tightly and arranged parallel to each other

Function: Attaches muscle to bone and bone to muscle. Withstands stresses applied in 1 direction, but TEARS in other direction

Location: Tendons, ligaments (knees, shoulder joints)
What type of tissue is this?
What type of tissue is this?
Elastic connective tissue
Describe elastic tissue. Function? Location?
Describe elastic tissue. Function? Location?
Description: Looks like rubber bands

Function: Allows for stretch and recoil, maintains pulsing flow of blood in arteries, aids recoil of lungs in respiration

Location: Very important in walls of large arteries, bronchial tubes
