composed of
fibroblasts, elastic fibers, collagenous fibers, ground substances
ground substance
can vary from fluid to solid. amporphous, gel-like, hydrophilic. secreted by fibroblasts
functions
support, storage, transport, protection, defense, healing
connective resident cell types (resident meaning stays in one area)
1. fibroblasts - most common cell type in CT. responsible for collagen production
2. macrophage - phagocytes that attacks and ingests foreign particles
3. mast cell - largest cell type. secretes heparin and histamin
connective fiber types
1. collagen - most abundant. high levels in bone and dentin. flexible, high tensile strength. binds structures. not elastic
2. Elastic - less strength but more easily stretched. Branched, usually networks. (ex. arteries, vocal cords)
3. Reticular - thin, composed of collagen. mesh like and distensible (ex liver)
CT classification
1. loose
2. adipose
3. dense
4. regular
5. irregular
loose
inc cells, dec fiber (under epithelia). delicate membrane. space filler for muscles
adipose (another type of loose)
fat. loose CT. Protect, insulate, and store energy
dense
decreased cells, increased fibers. densely packed collagenous fibers, few fibroblasts. Strong cords. Poor blood supply so slow healing. Can be classified as regular or irregular. Bottom of 57 helpful
