What is energy?
The property of a system that allows it to do work
A combination of energy and ___ make up the universe.
Matter
What is matter?
Substance we can see, smell, and feel
What is work?
A measure that involves force and distance (w=fd) and essentially yields the application of force, and movement onto the object the force is being applied to.
How much more work is being done when lifting 2 loads 1 story high versus lifting 1 load the same vertical distance?
Twice the amount of work, because the amount of force needed increases.
What is power?
Measure of how fast work is done. (Power= work done / time interval)
What are the two types of mechanical energy?
Kinetic and Potential energy
What is Potential energy?
Stored energy held in readiness with a potential for doing work
What is gravitational potential energy?
Potential energy due to elevated position
What is kinetic energy?
Energy of motion. Depends on the mass of the object and square of its speed
What is the Work energy theorem?
Gain or reduction of energy is the result of work (W=changeinKE).
Law of conservation of energy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed; it may be transformed from one form into another, but the total amount of energy never changes.
What is a machine?
Device for multiplying forces or changing the direction of forces
What is efficiency?
Percentage of work put into a machine that is converted into useful work output
