MFD

Multi-function device
Small sized; Have basic scanning and copying that are required for home users. Limited/no fax features and no networking
All-in-one (AIO MFD)
Medium sized; designed for small office/home offices; They have networking capabilities; contains enhanced features like: Enhanced faxing & auto-document feeder, duplex printing, duplex scanning, extra paper trays, and stapling
SOHO MFD
Large sized; network-enabled; Built to handle large volumes of printing, copying and scanning in an office; Contains enhanced features like: auto-document feeder, duplex printer and scanning and enhanced storage.
Heavy-duty MFD
Replaceable unit that contains fine powder to create images as well as additional components in image production.
Toner Cartridge
Contains the laser
Laser Scanning Assembly
Converts supplied current to optimal voltage for components and converts AC to DC for internal parts of the printer
High-Voltage power supply
Includes transfer belt and separator pads that move the paper through the laser printer.
Paper Transport Mechanism
Carries an electrical charge to attract toner, then transfer toner to the paper
Electrostatic Photographic Drum (EP Drum or Imaging Drum)
Contains corona wires; Charges the paper so it pulls the toner off of the drum; Charges the drum itself too
Transfer Corona Assembly
Applies pressure and heat to the paper to adhere the toner particles to the paper
Fuser Assembly (Fuser)
Exposes and processes all of the data received from the computer and coordinates the steps needed to produce the finished page
Formatter Board
There are ____ steps in the laser print process
7
The EP drum is cleaned with a rubber squeegee blade
Cleaning
Charges are removed from the EP drum in prep for the next image
Erasing
The imaging drum is prepped by charging it with a charge roller. The roller is connected to a high-voltage power supply unit to produce negative charges. A laser with positive charges is cast on the negatively charged drum. A mirror that rotates reflects the laser onto the drum.
Cleaning (conditioning)
A laser writes to the EP drum, giving portions of the drum a weaker negative charge
Writing
Toner is attracted to the drum that were hit by the laser. Inside the toner cartridge, a thin layer of toner is applied to the surface of the drum. A wipe blade spreads the toner evenly, leaving only the toner writing by the laser
Developing
Positively charged paper is fed into the printer by the pickup rollers. The positively charge paper attracts the negatively charged toner that is stuck to the drum. The toner sticks loosely on the paper.
Transferring
The toner is melted and fused with the paper permanently.
Fusing
This printer forms images by spraying liquid ink from an ink cartridge out of nozzles.
Inkjet
There are ___ steps in the inkjet printing process
4
A motor and belt mechanism moves a printhead across the printer. A stepper motor, along with gears, advance the paper into the printer
Preparation
As the printhead moves across the paper, images are formed by heat or vibration forcing liquid ink out of nozzles onto the paper.
Ink Dispersion
The printhead moves back and forth across the paper, printing one row of the image at a time.
Ink Deposit
The paper advances using rollers and feeders after every row until the page is covered
Paper Advance
The process that enables automatic printing and scanning on both sides of printing media.
Duplexing (Duplexing Assembly)
A printer that uses a heating element to create the image on the paper with dye, ink from ribbons, or directly with pins while the feed assembly moves the media through the printer.
Thermal Printer
A thermal printer is most commonly used with
Cash registers to print receipts
Used to print receipts or invoices
Impact Printer
A type of impact printer that uses a set of pins to strike the ribbon. Dot-matrix printers create printed characters by using various combinations of dots.
Dot-matrix printer
The impact printer process consists of ___ steps
4
Pins shoot out of the printhead and strike an ink-coated ribbon. The dots created on the page become the printed text/graphic.
Pin Strike
The pin transfers ink from the ribbon to the printed page.
Ink transfer
After pins have fired, an electromagnet pulls them back in. The pins move a fraction of an inch and another set of pins is fired.
Printhead Move
This connects the dots to form sharper and clearer letters.
Letter Quality Pass
1) Use the printer to prevent the ink from drying out and clogging the nozzles.
2) Run the printer's cleaning utility to clean the printhead.
3) Run the printer's nozzle test.
Inkjet Printer
1) Regularly clean the paper path and the ribbon path using a dry, soft cloth.
2) Replace the printhead, ribbon and paper when needed.
3) Regularly vacuum the dust from the wheels in the tractor feed assembly.
4) To avoid overheating the printhead, be mindful of the printer's location. Make sure it is clear of clutter and other machines.
Impact Printer
1) Replace the toner cartridge once it gets low.
2) Clean excess toner out of the printer each time you replace the cartridge to avoid buildup inside the printer.
3) Keep it well ventilated with proper spacing from other devices.
Laser Printer
1) Replace the paper when needed
2) The heating element may need cleaning to prevent buildup and smudging
3) Remove debris from inside and outside printer to prevent unwanted particles from getting to the printer components.
Thermal Printer
