Anything that is written.

What is the difference between setting and scene?

Setting is more general and refers to the where and when, geographically and historically. Scene is more specific and refers to what is around you and the physical space in which the story takes place.

What are characters?

Agents that are capable of action within the story. To what degree can somebody act?

What is characterization?

Ascribing personality traits to characters based on actions. Getting to know the character. We can learn this implicitly or explicitly.

What is plot?

The sequence of actions and events within a story.

What are the two components of plot?

Story and discourse.

What is story?

The chronological sequence of action and events.

What is discourse?

How the events of the story are presented to us (not necessarily in chronological order).

What is narration?

The storytelling.

What are the three components of narration?

Voice, tone, and focalization.

What is voice?

The choice of words and language that tell us about the narrator's character.

What is tone?

The emotional language used by the narrator, the attitude of the narrator.

What is focalization?

When the narrator focuses in on one character until the point of view of the narrator and character become one.
