Describe and demonstrate how to whip a rope |
1. Cut away any of the rope that has unraveled. 2. Form a loop in a 2-foot long piece of string and lay the loop along one end of the rope. 3. Tightly wrap the string around the rope, working your way toward the loop. 4. When the whipping is at least as wide as the rope is thick, tuck the end of the string through the loop and pull hard on the free ends to tighten the string. 5. Trim away the extra string. |

Can be used when the rope is made of plastic or nylon. 1. Cut off the frayed part of the rope. 2. In a well-ventilated area, hold the rope end a few inches above a lighted match or candle to fuse the strands together. 3. Don't touch the end until it has cooled. |

It is used to tie bandages and packages. It is a joining knot because it joins 2 ropes. 1. Hold a rope end in each hand. 2. Pass the right end over and under the rope in your left hand. 3. Pass the rope end now in your left hand over and under the one now in your right. 4. Pull the knot snug. |

Demonstrate how to tie and tell the use of Two Half Hitches |
It forms a loop that can be adjusted to make it smaller or larger -- to tie a rope around a post. 1. Pass the end of the rope around the post. 2. Bring the end over and under the body of the rope, then back through the loop that has formed -- making a half hitch. 3. Take the end around the standing part a 2nd time and tie another half hitch. 4. Pull it snug. |

Demonstrate how to tie and tell the use of a Taut-Line Hitch |
It is used to make a line tight, or taut -- to stake out the guy lines of your tent. 1. Pass the line around a tent stake. 2. Bring the end under & over the standing part of the line to form a loop, then twice through the loop. 3. Again bring the rope end under, over, and through a loop but this time farther up the standing part. 4. Work any slack out of the knot. 5. Slide the hitch to tighten or loosen the line. |
