Closed Questioning
Focused and seeks a particular answer
Ex: How old are you?
How many children to do you have?
Open-Ended Questioning
Does not require a specific answer and cannot be answered by yes or no
Ex: How do you feel about having surgery tomorrow?
Restating
Repeating to the patient what the nurse believes to be the main point.
Ex: "I'm not sure how I will manage the housework when I get home" Your husband will expect you to do the housework when you get home?
Paraphrasing
Restatement of the patients message in the nurses own words
Ex:"I wish I was having general anesthetic instead of spinal", "You are concerned that you might have complications?"
Clarifying
Seeks to understand the patients message by asking for more information
Ex: medication to expensive so only taking it every other day
Focusing
Encourages the patient to select one topic over another as the primary focus of discussion
Ex: Don't let them give me anymore morphine. Last time I almost died. " please tell me what happened last time you took morphine"
Reflecting
Assists the patient to reflect on inner feelings and thoughts rather than seeking answers.
Ex: Sometime I think my family is falling apart, "what do you think you should do"
Stating Observations
Nurse makes observations of the patient during an interaction and communicates these observations back to the patient
