What is embryology?
Development of a baby starting at conception and ending at the end of the 8th week.
What is the embryonic period?
Beginning of 3rd week to end of 8th week
All essential structures for speech and hearing form during the embryonic period. (T/F)
TRUE
What are gametes?
Sexual Germ Cells; male is sperm and femal is egg or ovum
What is the new cell formed from the union of two gametes?
Zygote or fertilized egg
Where and When does the union of two gametes occur in the female's body?
In the uterine tube, 12-24 hours after conception during ovulation
After a zygote is formed, what occurs next?
Cleavage or mitotic cell division. 2 becomes 4 then 4 becomes 8.
After Cleavage what is the next stage?
The morula, about the 3rd day after fertilization, and there are about 12-16 cells.
Trophoblasts
Cells have continued to divide after the morula stage, and cells begin to move. Some form to the outer edge which is what these cells are.
What do the outer cells (trophoblasts) eventually form?
placenta
after the morula stage, and cells begin to move. Some form the inner cell mass which is what these cells are.
embryonic tissue
Implantation of the Blastocyst begins between the _ and _ day and is completed by the _ day
5th, 7th, 10th
The morula stage comes about the _ day of fertilization
3rd
Name two parts of the Blastocyst
Trophoblasts and Inner Cell Mass
Trophoblasts surround what
the inner cell mass
Once the blastocycst has completed implantation, cells begin to
differentiate at week two
What are the primary germ layers of blastocyst cell differentiation?
Ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm
Decribe Ecotoderm
Upper layer of the primary germ layer differentiation of the blastocyst, forms epidermis of skin, teeth, nervous system, hair, nails, and epithelial tissue
When are the primary germ layers of blastocyst cell formed?
Week two and cells differentiate
Describe Mesoderm
Middle/Between layer of the primary germ layer differentiation of the blastocyst, forms connective tissue, bones, muscles, blood vessels and cartilage
Decribe Endoderm
Lower/Inner layer of the primary germ layer differentiation of the blastocyst, forms epithelial lining of the digestive tract and respiratory tract
Attachment to the uterine lining occurs in what stage?
during the blastocyst stage
Implantation or _______ happens during the blastocyst stage
attachment to the uterine lining
